Portavadie Green Policy

Portavadie is a developing green destination, we are very grateful that nature has given us a magnificent setting from which to grow. We therefore hope you help us in maintaining its splendour.

Construction of Portavadie has won The Argyll Sustainability Award for not only its design but also the regeneration of the area on two occasions firstly in 2009 and again in 2016. Where once sat a wasteland, now stands a vibrant luxury destination employing over 90 full time staff and bringing prosperity and leisure together. Our luxury apartments benefit from air source heat heat pumps providing low energy underfloor heating throughout. The Lodge and Studio`s are heated from wood chip sourced and produced some 500 yards from our entrance providing renewable heat source for 16 bedrooms. The newly opened Spa and Leisure Experiences are heated by biomass boilers and we have a silo storage of some 140 cubic metres of wood chip. Additionally we have 85 KW of PV panels installed in 2016 providing solar generated electricity to offset our reliance on outsourced power.

At Portavadie, we endeavour to source all our supplies from local business, Loch Fyne Ales, Argyll Smokery and Prentice Seafood are just some of the nearby companies we support. Chef has recently installed our own poly-tunnel from which selected herbs and salads are grown on site for chef to delight your taste buds.

There is a wide range of Fair-trade products including chocolates, wines and teas. The Shop has superb range of gifts, candles, clothes and jewellery many of which are made by local companies/ethically sourced and here you can also recycle domestic batteries.

Please endeavour to recycle. Make use of the multitude of bins on site, glass of various colours, cardboard, paper, plastics and cans can all be recycled on site. If residing in the lodge or studios there are recycle facilities located both at lodge entrance and at the Studio Apartments. If residing at the apartments there are recycle facilities located in the walled area to the left of the marina reception. Cottages and Tighnamara have general wastes bins, which are filtered.

Although remote, it is possible to travel to Portavadie without a car and to use public transport while you’re here. You can reach the Cowal Peninsula with Western Ferries, which offers a service between McInroy’s Point (Gourock) and Hunter’s Quay (Dunoon). Argyll Ferries operates a daily frequent passenger-only service between Dunoon and Gourock which has connections from Glasgow Central Station. You can also get a CalMac ferry from Tarbert on Kintyre to Portavadie and from Rhubodach on Bute to Colintraive. National coach services run from cities and towns across Scotland to Dunoon where you can link to local services that will take you to Portavadie. National coach services also run to Tarbert, where you can catch a ferry to Portavadie. Argyll and Bute Council offer detailed public transport guides which include local bus companies that operate across the region. West Coast Motors operates a bus service between Dunoon and Tighnabruaich, but check the times as there are only a few a day.

We maintain a resident Green Team, which meets monthly and is charged with attaining our target of reducing site energy by 20%.The GT regularly arranges both on site and nearby off site clean ups, for local bays and beaches. The GTBS has awarded Portavadie a Silver Award on our first site visit and achieved Gold standard membership in 2016
